In 2007 the ministry of education opened up an amazing opportunity for artists, schools and communities by launching a ground breaking project called "Artists in schools". To find out more about the Artist in schools project please visit here
here you can view Yr 3 Whangaparaoa primary students actively engaging and participating in workshops based around a theme of "Lanterns" These projects successfully integrated cultural heritage (syndicate 3 was looking at China and the Olympics as a topic) maths (measurement, geometry) science (material world, chemical change, light, construction) and ICT (Room M1 entered TVNZ web challenge and made their own website based on how they made their own lanterns! you can view this site in another window here.
The children made several variations of paper lanterns. Some had straw and lolly-pop stick skeletons covered with tissue paper. Some made cylindrical lanterns made of water-strength paper decorated with vivid and dye. A few classes became very excited with their lanterns and explored other methods of stapling paper, covering balloons with wire to construct lanterns the shape of fish, as well as balloons papier mache`d with coloured tissue paper.
